Jorakuji

Jorakuji

This is a Kenchou era (1249-1256) Rinzai-sect temple. It was established in 1237. Taiko Gyoyu founded the temple and Hojo Yasutoki laid the foundation. “Awafune Midou” was built for the memorial service of Yasutoki’s mother-in-law and is said to be the beginning of the temple. After the death of Yasutoki, the 5th generation of the regent to the shogunate, Hojo Tokiyori, invited the Zen priest, Lanxi Daolong, from the Southern Song Dynasty to teach Rankei. Since then, it is said that many monks visited to learn the teachings of Rankei. It is said that after Rankei, during the 5th year of the Kenchou era (1254), Kencho-ji was founded and “Jorakuji became the base of Kencho-ji”.
