During the Nara period (710-794), this was the temple where the bodhisattva Gyoki created the longevity Jizou Bodhisattva statue to be enshrined. It is said that it became the origin of the name “Zushi”. During the Heian period (794-1185), a great Buddhist teacher stopped by and enshrined Jizo in a miniature shrine (zushi = tools used to make wooden box-shaped Buddhist statues), and since then it is said to that we call the area that the temple is in, “Zushi”.
