Kannonzaki Lighthouse

Kannonzaki Lighthouse

This western-style lighthouse is located on the eastern end of the Miura Peninsula. On the Uraga Suido Passage you can see various boats entering and leaving Tokyo Bay. Kannonzaki Lighthouse is called sakigake (charging ahead of others) in western culture. At the time of construction, there were no western lighthouse technology available in Japan, so they tried to purchase the technology and machinery from France and Britain, but the Tokugawa shogunate collapsed. The Meiji government then took over the lighthouse construction. It was completed on January 1, 1869 as Japan’s first western-style lighthouse, which was made by François Léonce Verny, the French leader of the Yokosuka Steel Works.
