Junisho Shrine

Junisho Shrine

The deity worshiped at this old shrine protects the Ashina Castle. It was formerly called Miura Jyuni Tenmei Kami. The Kamakura shogunate (1185-1333) compiled the history book “Azuma Kagami”, that states that Minamoto no Yoritomo sent his vassal to visit one of eight shrines to pray for his wife, Hojo Masako, to have an easy delivery. On the grounds, there is a “Obitoke Koyashujizo” that is said to have been made from the ashes of a disguised bandit who was parading as a Great Buddhist teacher. There is also a spot used to pray for easy childbirth.
