One part of the ‘Kanagawa Sea Project’ is the hosting of Enoura Fishing Harbor’s Barrier-free diving which has been arranged for 3 years in a row in Odawara city.
A strong wish to share the joy of diving with disabled people was the original drive that gave birth to this event. Here we have the pleasure of sharing our experiences from the latest Barrier-free Diving Festival that was arranged on the 10th of October.

Barrier-free Diving Festival, an event that aims to allow divers with disabilities to participate equally was hosted on the 10th of October at Enoura Fishing Harbor in Odawara. This was the 3rd year in a row that the event has been arranged. And the assignment this time was nothing other than ‘underwater cleaning’!

Wheelchairs usable on the beach and locker room is all arranged for and provided to ensure a barrier-free space. Many volunteers hurried to help out at the event and support the divers whenever necessary. Thanks to both the diving instructors and the volunteers, safe diving could be enjoyed.

It might seem hard to enter the water while using a wheelchair but thanks to the upheaval of the rules of gravity, you can actually move more freely than on land.

After everyone had experienced the water, we initiated the trial of the year, underwater cleaning.

About water and beach pollution
Since a couple of years back, the problem of human waste polluting the beaches and seas around the world have been getting increased attention. Most of the garbage found in the sea is actually not a product of big industries or developing countries. It’s actually the result of individuals like you and me throwing away plastic products and such… By polluting the seas around the world, we do not only destroy the beauty of nature, we actually change the eco-system and cause negative effects to animal- and plant life which in turn will ruin one of our most vital natural resources. Among the garbage we pulled up during the event, half consisted of fishing equipment. Apparently, PET-bottles was the most common waste until about 10 years ago. “No to littering, no to pollution and yes to always bringing your trash with you home.” This is a basic rule we hope that everyone can protect to ensure that our oceans have a future as well.
